Disaster and Post-Disaster Preparedness Collaboration

Why Utilize a School Medical Advisor?

  1. The collaboration of a holistic pediatric perspective with that of educators promotes development of a whole child wellness model.
  2. A dedicated physician advisor rather than volunteer physician parent or board member who is providing guidance as a good will gesture ensures accountability and best practices. While well intentioned, a volunteer may not be a pediatrician, may not have pediatric focused connections in the community (behavioral health, public health, specialty care, etc), and is not fully dedicated to the complex public health, developmental, and psychological needs of students
  3. A standard clinical approach allows for consistent answers to families, thereby decreasing the posturing by families that may have conflicting self-interests. This eliminates contention among Schools and Parents by aligning policy with sound evidence-based pediatric school health best practices.
  4. Medicine and public health are complex. This position will eliminate the undue staff burden of interpreting public health and state recommendations, allowing teachers and staff to focus on educational goals. Additionally, this provides the School with the backing of the School Medical Advisor when speaking with families.
  5. A standardized, collaborative approach to optimizing health of students and staff can minimize sick times, improve athletic performance, promote lifetime healthy behaviors, and also save costs by enacting best practices.
